Day One
Global Academics travelers arrive at the Rafael Nunez International Airport (CTG) and transfer to the Hayatt Regency Cartagena Hotel or similar
Hosted Welcome Dinner in old town
Meet our local expert guide for an introductory conversation about the Afro Colombian experience
Day Two
Breakfast at the hotel is included each day
Walking Tour of Cartagena to explore the sights, foods and historical locations related to slavery including the auction sites, churches that punished Africans for holding onto their culture and the Bazurto Market where many Afro Colombians sell goods
Workshop: Slavery and Resistance in Colombia
Day Three
Tour: Afro Colombian mural tour to learn about the use of art as political expression. On this tour we will meet local young artists. This tour includes a visit to Getsemeni an visually stunning neighborhood that is experiencing rapid gentrification of its Black residents
Workshop: Afro Colombian drum and dance class for interactive engagement
Day Four
Visit to Santa Ana a small Afro Colombian town to learn about the origins
Free beach day at Playa Blanca
Day Five
Day long visit to Palenque/Palenke, considered the first Black free town in the western hemisphere. This visit will include meeting many locals, elders, and children. Learning about natural healing remedies and enjoying a drum and dance performance in honor of the “rebel slave” and descendants
Day Six
Fly to Medallin and check into the Hotel Du Park or similiar
Workshop: Meet with local grass roots organizers to learn about the Black resistance movement in Medallin
Night out in the Parque Lleras area for dancing and fun
Day Seven
Walking tour of Medallin with local guide to see the sights and learn about the cities difficult past and pride in the rebuilding of its identity
Adventure: Take the Metrocable to Parque Arvi to experience the panoramic view of the city
Free afternoon to explore
Tour: The Casa de la Memoria Museum to learn about the drug wars with an emphasis on raising the voices of the victims and survivors. This tour will counter the glamorization and depoliticization of the drug wars that often occurs in U.S. media.
Tour: Visit to the reclaimed neighborhood of Comuna 13 and Las Escaleras. This is an artistic community with many murals and a close community. Locals will discuss the transformation of the neighborhood
Day Eight
Day trip to Guatape, a picturesque colorful lake town outside of Medallin
Day Nine
Return back to the U.S. or extend your stay
